Ecotourist potential of the Municipality

Important tourist destinations of the Municipality are wetlands of natural origin like lake Durankulashko blato, lake Shabla, lake Beloslavsko, etc and of artificial origin like the dams - "Eleshnitsa", "Tsonevo", "Ticha", etc., forest regions and plain ecosystems which are rich in biodiversity, including 7 out of 19 bird species endangered worldwide, which can be found in Europe. Here one can find the most presentable coastline forest in Bulgaria - around the mouth of the Kamchia river as well as one of the most beautiful rock phenomena in the country - the Pobiti Kamani - a natural reserve. There are some plateaus in the area as well, the most significant of which are Shumensko, Provadijsko, Royaksko.

On the territory of the tourist destinations there are the following protected territories:

two natural parks (Natural Park - "Zlatni Pyasaci (Golden Sands), Natural Park - Shumensko Plateau, twelve nature sanctuaries - Kaliakra, Kamchia, Baltata, etc, twenty-one protected areas (Pobiti Kamani, lake Durankulashko blato, lake Shabla, Yailata, etc., thirteen natural attractions. Here one can see as well ten ornithological important sites.

The tourist destination has a rich historical and cultural past including unique cultural monuments. The remains of the first two Old Bulgarian capitals - Pliska and Preslav are located in this tourist destination. A few medieval fortresses can also be seen here. An example is Kaliakra, which is a cultural monument included in the list of the world cultural and historical legacy - UNESCO. Another monument, included in this list is the Equestrian of Madara - Madarski Konnik, a group of rock monasteries, the most famous of which is the Alagia Monastery, gold of the Necropolis in Varna, which has been declared the oldest wrought gold in the world. In the immediate vicinity of the town of Kaolinovo is the game-breeding station - Palamara, Municipality of Venets, etc.

As a result of the situational analysis and on basis of the already existing vision for the region, there are the following strategic goals and priorities for the development of ecotourism in this tourist destination:

4.1 Preserving the natural, cultural and historical legacy:

Objectives:

1.Enlarging the network of protected territories and improving their management;

2.Improving the efficiency in the protection of the territories (achieving an efficient control and protection) and restoring the state of the natural resources and minerals in the region;

3.Creating positive expectations for protection of the natural and cultural legacy amongst the local communities;

4.2 Achieving a stable development of the eco-tourist business

4. Encouraging the development of the eco-tourist resource potential on a regional and local level;

5. Making eco-tourist products and building infrastructure;

6. Creating conditions for distribution and exchange of information, marketing, advertising of ecotourism;

7. Creating conditions for financing the elaboration and development of ecotourist products.

4.3 Regional and local development - more objectives:

8. Realizing ecotourism - a strategy for local and regional development;

9. Creating opportunities for planning, coordinating and managing the development of ecotourism in this tourist destination.
